Shamsi Talab

SLAVE DYNASTY (1230)

Shamsi Talab

A 13th century, Sultanate-period pond made by the orders of Sultan Iltutmish, who wanted to build a local water body to meet the water needs of the locals. The legend goes that this exact place appeared in the Sultan's dream and a fountain of water gushed when they dug it. Today the talab is fringed by domed pavilions and overlooked by the Jahaz Mahal, and remains a quiet, atmospheric corner of Mehrauli. Quick reference — Period: Sultanate. Hours: daytime. Cost: free. Attire: no special requirements.
